Description
In a
series
of
three
workshops
in
western
North
Carolina
and
eastern
Tennessee
, the
Asheville
Field
Office
got
area
teachers
into the
field
to
explore
water
quality
and
stream
monitoring
.
During
each
of the
one-day
workshops
the
teachers
tested
water
chemistry
,
collected
and
calculated
some
basic
stream
flow
data
, and
collected
and
identified
aquatic
macroinvertebrates
.
Between
the
field
experiences
and the
teaching
materials
provided
,
teachers
leave
the
workshop
with the
knowledge
they
need
to
begin
basic
stream
monitoring
projects
with their
students
.
Due
to the
diversity
of
aquatic
life
in the
Southern
Appalachians
and the
challenge
of
conserving
river
systems
, the
Asheville
Field
Office
has
long
used
its
environmental
education
efforts
to
empower
students
,
teachers
, and
other
citizens
to
make
informed
and
responsible
decisions
about
stream
conservation
.
Additional
support
for the
workshops
was
provided
by the
National
