Description	Spreading avens is a federally-protected plant that grows on the tops of the highest mountains in the Eastern United States. Found only in a handful of places, it suffers from poaching, trampling, and an uncertain future in the face of climate change. The plant has been the subject of an intense range-wide monitoring effort by a team of biologists who collect a wealth of data on its status. These data help land managers gauge the success of their efforts to protect the plant and provides a glimpse into how the cold, moist natural communities found on Appalachian mountain tops may be changing, especially in light of climate change.
