U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service 2011 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation State Overview Issued September 2012 Preliminary Estimates 2 2011 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation: State OverviewU.S. Fish & Wildlife Service 2011 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation State Overview Issued September 2012 Preliminary Estimates2 2011 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation: State Overview Preface USFWS This is the second report providing preliminary information from the 2011 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife‑Associated Recreation. The first report was issued in August 2012 and presented data for the nation as a whole. This report provides information on state and multi‑state regions. The final national report will be available in November and the state reports will be issued beginning in December 2012. The Survey presents information on U.S. residents’ participation in and expenditures for hunting, fishing, and wildlife watching. Wildlife watching is closely observing, photographing, and feeding wildlife. Natural resource agencies, conservation organizations, academic researchers, and wildlife‑related recreation industries use this information to estimate demand, evaluate impacts of expenditures on national and state economies, and identify trends in wildlife‑related recreation. The release of preliminary survey results is an effort to make the information available as soon as possible. Please note that the information is subject to revision and in the final reports there will likely be changes in some estimates. 2011 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation: State Overview 3 Foreword USFWS The 2011 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife‑Associated Recreation is the twelfth in a series of surveys conducted since 1955. It was coordinated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The Survey was requested by the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies and was developed with assistance from state agencies, national conservation organizations, and wildlife‑related recreation industries. The data were collected by the U.S. Bureau of Census. The Census Bureau began by interviewing 48,627 households in April of 2011. 16,371 active and potential anglers and hunters and 13,861 active and potential wildlife watchers were selected from the initial households to be interviewed in detail about their participation and expenditures in wildlife‑related recreation. The Census Bureau conducted detailed interviews three times, beginning in April and September of 2011 and January of 2012. Interviews were completed in May 2012. This report includes trend information from the 2006 Survey. This information covers the change in the numbers of hunters, anglers, around‑the‑home wildlife watchers, and away‑from‑home wildlife watchers in each region. Each Survey provides estimates of the number of wildlife‑related recreationists and their expenditures for a given year, in this case 2011. The Survey was not designed to quantify the total number of active and potential recreationists, given that many individuals consider themselves anglers, hunters, or wildlife watchers even though they did not participate in 2011. 4 2011 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation: State Overview Overview In 2011 over ninety million U.S. residents – 38% of the population 16 years old and older – enjoyed recreational activity related to fish and wildlife. Over 37 million people spent time fishing and/or hunting and nearly 72 million people engaged in wildlife‑watching activities such as closely observing, photographing, and/ or feeding wildlife. Expenditures related to wildlife‑related recreation totaled $145 billion nationally, 1% of the nation’s gross domestic product. Sportspersons spent $90 billion and wildlife watchers spent $55 billion in 2011. Regions This report presents data regionally, using the Bureau of Census’ nine regional geographic divisions. The regional data aggregates the activity estimates of state residents 16 years old and older. Information reported later in this report at the state level pertains to participation in‑state by residents and nonresidents 16 years old and older. The sum of all in‑state participants in a region does not equal the total number of regional participants because individuals may have participated in an activity in more than one State. Fishing Fishing continues to be a popular activity for the American people. 14% of the national population 16 years old and older fished in 2011. Regional participation rates ranged from 9% of the population in the Pacific Region to 23% in the West North Central Region. The East North Central, West North Central, East South Central, West South Central, and Mountain Regions were above the national average of 14%. Hunting Hunting was a favorite pastime for millions of Americans in 2011. Nationwide, 6% of the population 16 years old and older hunted in 2011. Regional participation rates ranged from 3% in the Pacific Region to 11% in the East South Central Region. Regions with participation rates above the national average of 6% were East North Central, West North Central, East South Central, and West South Central. Around‑the‑home wildlife watching is closely observing, photographing, feeding, visiting public areas, and maintaining plantings and natural areas, all within a mile of home. Participation rates for these activities ranged from 24% in the Pacific Region to 35% in the East North Central Region. Residents of the New England, East North Central, West North Central, and East South Central regions participated at rates above the national average in 2011. Nationwide, 9% of the U.S. population 16 years old and older took trips in 2011 for the primary purpose of closely observing, photographing, and/or feeding wildlife. Participation rates in these away‑from‑home activities ranged from 6% in the West South Central Region to 13% in the Mountain Region. Regions with participation rates above the national average were New England, West North Central, East South Central, Mountain, and Pacific. Participation Rates for Wildlife-Watching Participants, by Geographic Region: 2011 Around the Home Away from Home Participation Resident anglers by state ranged from 77,000 in North Dakota to 2.4 million in Texas. The proportion of state residents who fished varied from California’s 6% to Alaska’s 41%. The State with the most anglers, both resident and nonresident, was Florida (3.1 million). Resident hunters by state ranged from 23,000 in both Delaware and Hawaii to 1.1 million in Texas. The participation rate of hunters ranged from 1% in Massachusetts to 21% in South Dakota. The State with the most resident and nonresident hunters was Texas (1.1 million). Resident wildlife watchers by state ranged from 152,000 in North Dakota to 6.5 million in California. The participation rate of wildlife watchers ranged from 16% in Hawaii to 53% in Vermont. The State that hosted the most resident and nonresident wildlife watchers was California, with 6.7 million participants. This increase is statistically significant at the 5% level.1 At the regional level the number of anglers increased or stayed the same in all Regions. The biggest increase, 37%, was in the Middle Atlantic Region. The number of anglers did not change significantly in the West North Central, South Atlantic, and East South Central Regions. ■■ The 9% increase in hunters nationwide from 2006 to 2011 was statistically significant at the 5% level. The region with the biggest increase in hunters was the East South Central Region, with a 39% increase. Regions with no statistically significant change in hunters were the Middle Atlantic, West North Central, South Atlantic, and West South Central. 1 The 5% level of significance means that for 95% of all possible samples, the estimate for 2006 can be shown to be different from the estimate for 2011. This is determined by calculating the 95% confidence intervals around the 2006 estimate and the 2011 estimate and seeing if they overlap. If they do, we cannot say that the two estimates are different, since it would be possible to arrive at the same estimate for the two years. ■■ Nationally the number of people participating in around‑the‑home wildlife watching did not significantly change from 2006 to 2011. Three Regions had significant changes: West South Central with a 12% increase, New England with a 10% decrease, and West North Central with a 19% decrease. ■■ Away‑from‑home wildlife watching participation did not change nationally from 2006 to 2011. Regionally two areas, South Atlantic and Mountain, increased (37% and 11%, respectively) and the rest stayed level or decreased. The Region with the biggest decrease was the West South Central, at −19%. At the state level 28 States had increases in the number of wildlife‑related recreationists from 2006 to 2011, with the biggest percentage increases in Alaska (47%) and Louisiana (40%). The 2006–2011 increase in wildlife‑related recreation has not been reflected equally for sportspersons and wildlife watchers. 39% of wildlife‑related recreationists in 2006 were sportspersons and 81% were wildlife watchers (the percentages do not add to 100 because of the people who were both sportspersons and wildlife watchers). In 2011 42% of wildlife‑related recreationists were sportspersons and 80% were wildlife watchers. Wildlife watchers have roughly maintained their proportion in the overall increase of wildlife‑related recreation, but sportspersons have increased their proportion. The number of participants is not the only measure of the relative impact of sportspersons and wildlife watchers. Examination of expenditures shows that while sportspersons are a smaller proportion of all recreationists, they spend almost twice as much in total as wildlife watchers. About two‑thirds of all wildlife‑related recreation expenditures have been for hunting and/or fishing in 2006 (63%) and 2011 (62%). These preliminary Regional and State‑level estimates illustrate the continued importance and impact of fish and wildlife resources to each State, region, and the nation as a whole.
