Description	This image was taken at a Southern Appalachian bog in western North Carolina during a search for bog turtles conducted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and its volunteers. The bog turtle is the smallest turtle in North America. The species is protected under the Endangered Species Act and faces many threats from both poaching and habitat degradation as the wetlands where they live have disappeared dramatically over the decades.
