Description	In a series of three workshops in western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee, the Asheville Field Office got area teachers into the field to explore water quality and stream monitoring. During each of the one-day workshops the teachers tested water chemistry, collected and calculated some basic stream flow data, and collected and identified aquatic macroinvertebrates. Between the field experiences and the teaching materials provided, teachers leave the workshop with the knowledge they need to begin basic stream monitoring projects with their students. Due to the diversity of aquatic life in the Southern Appalachians and the challenge of conserving river systems, the Asheville Field Office has long used its environmental education efforts to empower students, teachers, and other citizens to make informed and responsible decisions about stream conservation. Additional support for the workshops was provided by the National Park Service - Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and the Environmental Education Fund.
